Interserve Wins West Yorkshire Police Contract

The new West Yorkshire based PFI police divisional headquarters and training centre contract has been awarded to Interserve, beating competitors such as Balfour Beatty.

The project which was originally outlined to be worth £216m has recently been down-scaled to £100m in the wake of the Governments construction efficiency drive. As well as this change, the construction timetable has also been set back to 2012 summer, rather than the proposed spring start.

The project is expected to be completed in 2014.

The new divisional headquarters will be located at Elland Road, Leeds and Havertop Lane, Normanton. The additional training facility will be based at Carr Gate in Wakefield and will include firearms training ranges, driver and public order training facilities.

Chair of West Yorkshire Police Authority, Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson said, “This has been a tremendously competitive process, and with this approval, the delivery of the long awaited new facilities moves an important step closer.

“We have been impressed with the proposals developed by the Interserve design team which will deliver flexible, sustainable, innovative facilities fit for the 21st Century.”

This project will not only provide many new construction jobs but bidders have also committed to providing 85 apprenticeships too.
