New Power Station Plans Announced

Plans for two new power stations in Yorkshire have been announced by the government; the Thorpe Marsh Scheme and Ferrybridge Plant.

The Thorpe Marsh Scheme is £984m project by Acorn Power Developments. The site in North Doncaster will boast a 1,500 MV Combined Cycle Gas Turbine and is expected to create up to 800  new jobs.

The second site Ferrybridge based in Wakefield is a £250m project and will consist of an 108 MW Multifuel (biomass and energy from waste) power plant. This power plant is being delivered by SSE Generation and is expected to create a further 350 jobs.

Combined, the two plants will generate enough energy to power 2 million homes.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry said, “These new plants in Yorkshire are a fantastic example of new power stations bringing new jobs. These decisions are a further example or our determination to clear the back-log of planning applications, to stimulate growth and enhance our energy security.”

It has also recently been announced that EDF Energy has confirmed works at Hinkley Point C to commence in the Spring and have completed the sale of land at Wylfa to the Horizon nuclear consortium for a proposed new reactor.

A construction timetable is expected to be issued later in the year after full planning consent has been issued by the Infrastructure Planning Commission.

Since the Fukushima disaster there has been speculation over the viability of UK nuclear projects, with many countries indicating a move away from nuclear power. Here in the UK however, the government has backed plans to continue to invest in nuclear power and Dr Mike Weightman’s final report of the Fukushima disaster revealed no reason to hold back on new nuclear in the UK.

The prospect of so many new jobs being created is a positive result of the governments’ decision to go ahead with nuclear projects and as more new nuclear plans come to fruition the construction industry will hopefully get a much needed boost.
