Plans unveiled for rail link between Wales and Heathrow

Plans for a £500m rail scheme linking Wales and Heathrow have been proposed by the Department of Transport.

Transport minister Philip Hammond is said to be in the early stages of developing a new railway station at Heathrow linking Wales & the West of England directly to the airport, rather than through London. It will cut an estimated 30 minutes off the journey time.

The new line will reportedly accommodate four shuttle services an hour, between Reading and the airport and could also take direct trains from Cardiff and Bristol. The new hub will also give passengers travelling from Wales to the Midlands, Northern England or Scotland the option to join the high speed line from Heathrow. The hub will also be connected to one or more of the terminals to minimise disruption for travellers moving around the airport.

The improved links will significantly improve business prospects in South Wales and Cardiff. Graham Morgan, director at the South Wales Chamber of Commerce said, “There is a genuine belief that if Wales was time-wise closer to Heathrow then it would open up greater opportunities for inward investment, would attract businesses to Wales and would open up access to international markets.”

Not only will businesses prosper but so will jobs in the rail industry .  Although the scheme is in very early stages of development, the Department of Transport believes the hub and link could be operational by 2021.
